Issue Highlight: Chronic Absenteeism in Nation's Public Schools

Attendance in our nation's public schools has seen a decline since the pandemic.

While many thought attendance numbers would readjust, the reality is that we are missing students in our public schools, many of whom are not receiving the quality of education and services that they are desperately in need of.

From the article:

"New data released on the Return 2 Learn Tracker from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) shows chronic absenteeism, defined as students missing more than 10 percent of the school year, went from 15 percent in 2018 to 29 percent in 2022."

The districts feeling the greatest impacts are ones with high poverty rates and districts with a high minority population.
