The Atmosphere of Distrust Being Created in the Nation's Public Schools Unhealthy for Students and Teachers
South Carolina educator Mary Wood assigned Ta-Nehisi Coates's book "Between the World and Me" in her Advanced Placement English Language and Composition last year. Students complained to their parents, and Wood was ordered to stop the lesson and received a formal letter of reprimand in her personnel file. It sparked an entire debate in her town, of whether she should be fired and whether the book should be taught, in a now often-heard story about curriculum and culture wars.
