CHINO, CA – Our Schools USA, a grassroots non-profit founded by a parent and a former school board member dedicated to empowering parents, students, and community members to protect and advance quality public education for all students, today unveiled the Bill of Rights for All Parents and Students. The Bill of Rights is accompanied by a Candidate Pledge to hold candidates and school board members accountable and on the record that they want to protect choices for all families in public education.

“Educating children works best with engaged parents and caring teachers working together to create a safe space for all children to learn,” said parent, former teacher, and Our Schools USA co-founder Kristi Hirst. “Our Schools USA’s Bill of Rights is a common-sense document focused on protecting choices for all parents and families in our public schools.”

The Rights include:

Right #1: Students should be able to attend our schools free from verbal or physical violence.

Right #2: Our schools should provide the proper mental health supports for students to help them thrive in our schools.

Right #3: Our schools should be resourced with the personnel they need to keep our schools safe.

Right #4: Parents should be empowered to access our schools and should be listened to by their school boards.

Right #5: Parents should be able to easily know what their children are learning in our schools.

Right #6: Parents should be able to easily engage with their individual school sites and school districtwide administrators in our schools.

Right #7: Students should have the freedom to learn. Parents should not have choices taken away from them or their students in our schools.

Right #8: Students should be free to express themselves in our schools.

Right #9: Our schools should promote a culture of anti-bullying and conflict resolution.

Right #10: Our schools should be focused on personalized learning, teaching students in the way that works best for each individual student’s academic and social success.

Right #11: Our schools should be funded to have a wide range of programs and resources available to meet the needs of all students.

Right #12: Our schools should have as their primary focus academics and skills so that students can thrive within our public schools and after graduation.

Our Schools USA’s separate 527 Action Fund will be focused on supporting candidates for school board seats across the country in 2024.
